We had a really great weekend. It's too hot to do much during the day, so we've been hanging out inside and sneaking out whenever we can. Currently giving Henry and bath and listening to some David Bazan/Coconut Records/Death Cab/Father John Misty Pandora (thanks Garrison). As I type, Henry is most likely planning some huge bath splash that will destroy my computer and dress, so I'll leave it at this. Hope y'all had a great weekend too.

Movie Dates

When people tell you that the terrible twos are given a special name for a reason, they're TOTALLY RIGHT. What they rarely mention is that while toddlers have their extreme moments, they're mostly awesome. Henry is at this neat stage right now, we can do a lot more with him and see little glimpses of how he thinks and feels every day. He's always making us laugh, too. Some of the movie theaters around here play kids movies for $1 during the summer (your city probably does it too, check!). That's obviously a super deal for every one, but it's especially amazing for parents of young kids who can barely sit still for 10 minutes. We never really took Henry to the theaters before because it just seemed dumb to pay $25 for something he might not even like. I really like taking Henry on these little movie dates, we sneak in hella animal crackers and candy and I spend most of the time watching his reactions more than the movie. One time we even went to Bass Outlet before the movie, so he could look at all of the dead animals and ride the glass elevator. I'm completely loving this age, it makes me so excited for the years to come.

The Fourth of July was how long ago? Almost a month? I suck at blogging lately. School has been crazy this summer. And so has Henry. Ah, life. This year brought the best Fourth of July I've had in a long time. We didn't make any plans but ended up doing tons of awesome stuff. Like, everything just sort of fell into place on its own. That never happens anymore! Also, the past two years I've spent the Fourth huddled outside my baby's door muttering, "Don't you freaking dare wake up my baby with your stupid fireworks" and then wincing after every one. This year we actually got to watch the fireworks. We barbecued in the backyard. Henry went crazy in a gym full of bounce houses and arcade games. It was good.

On Being a Young Mom.

IMG_5473

Hey y'all. Can I just say honestly, that being a mom is super embarrassing sometimes? The majority of the time it's great. Your kid is being awesome and funny and charming and you're loving it...all proud to show him off. And then out of the freaking blue, your kid turns into this crazy psycho mini-person who's rolling all over the floor of the grocery store and screaming because he can't have a king sized bag of M&Ms. And then people are looking at you like, "Why can't that lady get her kid under control?" as you're frantically trying to make it all stop without using any of the junk food and tv bribes you use at home. I know other parents totally "get" these types of situations, but I'm not sure people our age really do. I realized this today when two 20 something year old guys actually laughed at me as I tried to coax my kicking son off of the coffee shop floor. It wasn't like a "that's really funny" laugh, more like a "Ohhhh pathetic" kind of laugh. I shot him a shaky, "Oh heeeey. I'm uh, really sorrrry about this kid thing," smile. But really, I was thinking, "YOUR DAY WILL COME HAHAHAHAHAHA".

Ugggh. I need a nap.

Look at the....AIRPLANE SMOKE!

IMG_5480

Our old neighbor came by our house about three months ago with a handful of little tadpoles for us. Apparently raising tadpoles to frogs is a lot harder than it sounds, I managed to kill all but one of the little guys. Two weeks ago we let the little lone frog go. It was actually really sad! I thought Henry would be way into it, or maybe a little sad too, but two year olds are pretty freaking oblivious. I was making this huge speech about "the wilderness, blah, blah, and how happy he'll be in his natural environment, blah blah" as I let him go, thinking that he was really digging the whole experience...but, no. He was more into the "airplane smoke" in the sky. Two year olds are funny.

We're having such a fun summer. Sure, I have endless loads of school work and it's rarely cooler than 100 degrees during the day, but there's something different about this summer that just feels nice. I think my mind is in a good place and that makes a huge difference. Sometimes it's so easy for me to get so stressed out about everything and that crap feeds into a million tiny crevices of my life. I'm realizing lately that often just not caring about certain things actually makes you feel better. So what if Henry is up half an hour later than usual? Does the house have to be totally clean all the time? Is it the end of the world if I forget something at the grocery store because I didn't sit down and make a list? NO. In the end, Henry will get back on schedule, the house will get picked up, and something else will be made for dinner. When you're a mom, there's just so much to worry and stress out. If you don't choose your battles, you'll feel like your drowning.

Henry is at this awesome age where you can do fun stuff with him and he actually gets into it. The baby days were fun and cuddly and all that but this kid lately? So awesome. It's fun watching Henry enjoy his summer. He loves playing with the hose, throwing water balloons, staying up late, and eating popsicles on the front porch. It all remindsme of when I was a kid. Summer just felt so...magical. I hope that's how Henry remembers his.

2 1/2 & 5.

wedding

Yesterday Garrison and I celebrated our 5 year wedding anniversary. 5 years! That's kind of a lot (even though it doesn't feel like it). We wrote little love notes to each other and ate a green cake that Henry and Garrison made for me while I was at class. I think Garrison was trying to keep it all a surprise, which would have happened if Henry hadn't been waiting for me at the front door screaming, "WE GOT YO' CAKE MOMMMMM! WE GOT YO' CAKE!" Anyway, it was cute. A great anniversary with my best friend and our little funny Henry.

He took a huge bite of this and started crying, "I don't yike it!" and spitting wax out all over the table and the floor.

Yesterday was also Henry's half birthday. We ate half of a donut and he was half good for the entire day.

Henry's Stories.

IMG_5388

Henry's been really into hearing made up stories about whatever subject he randomly chooses. I'm not going to lie, sometimes it's really annoying (like when you've told 35 stories about a giraffe with an ice cream cone in an hour). But he loves it, so we do it. Over and over and over. And lately he's been telling us stories! And they're freaking hilarious and cute and creative, so I guess our patience has paid off.

Here are some of his latest, written down exactly how he told them to me. It's fun seeing how he thinks and getting a peak into that curly little head.

#1: Once upon a time, there was a tadpole who was growing to a frog. Then he was a frog! Then he
went to the zoo with his mommy, who was a mommy frog. He was seeing all of the animals at the zoo.
The End.

#2: Once upon a time, there was a little birdie who loved to fly. And then his mommy birdie went flying too! And then his daddy went flying down the sky. And flying up the sky!
The End.

#3:

Once upon a time, there was a little cat who loved to get a donut. And he decided to get a donut from the donut lady. And the mommy cat say, "OKAY!" And they got to the donut store and she got a donut. And she got a sprinkle one.
The End.

We're Wimps.

"FEELS LIKE 111". And this wasn't even the hottest it got this weekend! I think Saturday it was almost 117 degrees. I'm not a huge fan of the heat but I actually kind of enjoyed it this time. It's nice to have an excuse to do absolutely nothing, you know? It's too hot to make dinner, let's get a pizza. It's too hot to clean the house, let's sit on the couch and read books. It's too hot to go swimming, let's go to the movies....We're huge wimps.

We escaped the heat by taking Henry to Madagascar 3(D y'all!!!) We've actually wanted to take him for a while but we weren't sure if the whole 3D thing would scare him. That's gotta be such a weird experience for a little mind. He actually liked it a bunch and didn't take the glasses of entire time! Honestly, I never really understood the whole 3D hype until this weekend. It rules! So much better than a regular old, dumb movie.

Don't let these pictures fool you. I guarantee you, we're all sweating through our clothes.
