Oh, Hello Fingers!
Henry was born with the need to suck. Right from the start, he hated having his hands swaddled tightly to his side, preferring to have them right next to his chubby cheeks. In the beginning the only way we could really comfort him was to offer up one of our fingers, which meant many nights of falling asleep with my hand stretched awkwardly into his bassinet.
I wasn't too sure I wanted H to be a "paci-baby" at first, I've seen how hard it is for some kids to give those up and I was afraid he'd reject breastfeeding because of nipple confusion. But after two weeks of waking up to a crooked neck and a hand that had fallen asleep, we decided that perhaps a paci wasn't too bad of an idea. Besides, I did like that they supposedly reduce the risk of SIDS and considering the fact that I sucked my thumb until I was in the first grade (I can prove it...it's still wrinkly! ACK!!) H probably doesn't stand a chance against some sort of finger sucking addiction. No way would my baby be a thumb sucker! Children won't be running around singing, "Baby, baby sucks his thumb!!" at my kid! Right?
Wrong. Henry merely tolerated his pacifier up until recently when this happened: he discovered his hands. Now it's so long binky, hello fingers (and sometimes whole fist!) Seriously, this kid sucks on his fingers so much that they are constantly covered in sticky, blue lint (what?) Looks like my H is destined to be a thumb sucker after all, just like his mom.
I'm learning that no matter how hard you try, you just can't decide what your child is going to do/not do.
I do think it's rather cute (at least for now!!)

as the mom of an obsessed thumb sucker, i feel your pain. not much we can do about it though, is there?
What a honey bun! Aidyn sucked on his hands too, but he doesn't now that he's big! I was so happy he never liked the pacifier!
An important thing to remember with small children is that everything is just a phase. If your baby is always sad; phase. happy; phase (sorry!) sucking his thumb; PHASE. Some phases last longer than others--too long depending on who you ask--but it's important to remember to use your best judgment when it comes to whether or not to sweat the little things. :)
Very true, Paige. I do think it's awfully cute when he sucks on his fingers and I'd so much rather him do that than a paci...but still. Braces are expensive AND it's a hard habit to break (I know!)
Brittany: so good to hear he stopped now that he's older...did you do anything special to help him stop, or did he just decide he was done on his own?
Jamie: I didn't know Jude sucks his thumb?! I bet he's the cutest thumb sucker ever, anything that kid does is just plain adorable!

Oh Honey, those are very, very prophetic words!

he is super cute.. and I love your header on your blog! Adorable! My little one had no problems giving up the pacifier!
Hey Hollie! Thanks :) That's awesome that you were able to wean so early! I'm heading over to your blog right now, thanks for stopping by mine!
what a sweetie! poppy never tolerated a paci - offered her one @ around 5 weeks old (like you, i didn't want it to become a habit that disrupted breastfeeding!) and i think she was just like, "what the eff is this thing? there's no food coming out?" so she'd projectile-spit it out every time! (; guess that's one less thing we'll have to worry about when they're toddlers, eh?
that lil' henry is so dang delicious! and i love your felt booties from your about post! i'm not going to enter since p is a swarthy one year old and her feet are gigantic, but those are VERY cute!!
cheers!
It's sooo funny to me how little babies just know how to spit out a pacifier when they don't want it. That always amazed me!! You're right, it is one less thing to worry about though...fine with me!
I just noticed yesterday that you had made a pair of the felt booties for P as well...yours were SO cute (but then again, everything you make is...I'm always so jealous!)
Thanks so much for the comment, Emily!
